Strength in hands remained good and
in 1945 he began work in a slaughter house
where he split pigs down the back with a 16 lb. cleaver.
He did that until 1950 when he was 43.
About 1944 Dr. Gardner, a neuropsychiatrist in St. Paul
diagnosed primary muscular atrophy
and commented on the grooves in George’s tongue.
Since about that time cold weather hampered fine
muscle movements, like buttoning his shirt.
Since about 1961 (age 54) chewing food became difficult.
He now held his chin up with his hands in order to chew.
His voice changed at about the same time.
By 1964 walking had become a problem.
